Trump reviews Visa Waiver Program and ESTA

Trump has signed an executive order that immediately suspends the Visa Interview Waiver Program (VIWP). This has nothing to do with the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) that is based on ESTA.

This is the paragraph in the executive order that suspends the VIWP: “the Secretary of State shall immediately suspend the Visa Interview Waiver Program and ensure compliance with section 222 of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1222, which requires that all individuals seeking a nonimmigrant visa undergo an in-person interview, subject to specific statutory exceptions.”

So it states that everyone that applies for a visa for the USA will have to come to the embassy for an interview. When you renew a visa, you also have to go for an interview. This was not necessary under the VIWP.

Nothing is said about changes to the ESTA procedure, so residents of countries in the VWP can still travel to the USA after acquiring an ESTA travel authorisation.

But in VTM NIEUWS Belgian Minister of Internal Affairs, Jan Jambon, said that Trump had also decided to review the Visa Waiver Program. Jambon said: “He will review the process the next 30 days, followed by negotiations for 60 days.”

At VRT Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Theo Francken, complimented Jambon: “The next 90 days the USA will review if our country shares enough information with the USA. If not, we will have a problem.”

So it could be possible Trump is going to change the rules for ESTA…
